WHAT IS ENCAUSTIC ART?
Encaustic is a Greek work (enkaustikos) which means “burned in”. Encaustic is an ancient painting method in which wax and pigment are fused onto a surface with heat. The technique of mixing pigment and wax creates a vibrant luminosity.
Cold Wax is considered to be a form of encaustic painting although the process requires no heat or fusing. Cold Wax painting heavily utilizes CWM (cold wax medium) mixed with oil paint. In its own way, Cold Wax Painting blurs the line between oil painting and hot wax encaustic painting.
